This article was for me a real revelation. We only hear glowingly positive things in the West about Deng's reforms. What is so impressive is the China leadership was able to change course before it was too late, and that's a tribute to their realism and pragmatism. So often it seems that "free market" liberalization and privatization are basically impossible to revert; they get locked in, as in is the case here in Europe.

Very interesting. Although I've lived in China some time, lack of access in books written in English and a low level of rading ability in Chinese has resulted in some real holes in my historical knowledge of modern China. You must be pleased to see that Xi and his administration is working hard to reverse a lot of the negatives which have appeared with 'get rich first (no matter how)'. Thanks for this, Mike Liston
